Your front porch is the perfect opportunity to give guests a great first impression as they enter your home. Following a few guidelines, you can positively impact your curb appeal and complement your home’s exterior while allowing your personality to shine and setting the tone for the interior decor of your home. Let’s take a look at how to make your front porch simply splendid.

First, make sure everything is in working order and repair what isn’t. A fresh coat of paint will help create a pristine foundation for your furnishings. If you are looking for a pop of color, try painting your door a bright color or adding bold-colored furnishings. If you prefer a subtler approach, a great way to add color without changing your home’s look from the curb is to paint your porch’s ceiling and floor in the same or opposing accent colors

When choosing furniture, try neutral pieces and choose textiles and accessories in a monochromatic color palette. This provides an easy way to create a chic, tailored appearance. Use pillows and accessories to punch things up. Changing out accessories is an easy way to transition from one look to the next without purchasing big-ticket items again and again.

Accessorizing your outdoor space shouldn’t differ from decorating the interior of your home. It’s crucial to make it comfortable and inviting. But, you can allow yourself to be a bit more casual when you’re outside. Including relaxing elements such as a hammock or swing can add tremendous personality and make the space fun and relaxing. And don’t forget to include a nice selection of pillows and a beautiful rug to unify your outdoor living space. Curtains or a partial screen can also add a nice touch.

Organize your furniture layout outside to encourage visitors to linger and converse a bit longer. However, instead of orienting the furniture towards a fireplace or television, the focal point will be your view. Make sure to face your most substantial piece of furniture where the scenery and welcome neighbors and guests to visit.

Finally, be sure to include some attractive plant containers (I love these and these ones) to finish the look and accent the front entrance to the house. Then, sit back, relax, and enjoy the setting you’ve created that truly makes you feel at home and might make your guests never want to leave.

Which porches or features do you like best? And, what improvements have you made to your front porch? Unsure what to choose? Email me a photo of your space, and I’ll give you a few ideas (really!).

Since 2015, I have helped over 100 interior designers, builders, builders, and architects – from those just starting out to award-winning designers published in Architectural Digest, Luxe, and more.

My process starts with what is already true within you, then brings it to life in a way that resonates with your ideal clients.

I work with designers because they’re awesome. I’m a member of IDS (Interior Design Society) and served on the board of the Virtual Chapter. Design events I’ve attended include High Point, Vegas Market, and BOLD Summit (Business of Luxury Design).

When I’m not creating brands and websites, you can find me listening to audiobooks and going on long speed walks with friends.

I’m from Seattle and now live in New York City with my wife, Gaby.
