The Fireside Terrace

UNIVERSITY PARK | DALLAS, TX

To upgrade the property, and make the space more usable, we decided to square off and elevate the terrace to the level of the home and above the lawn. We created a scored concrete pattern to look like a large-scale tile and dressed it up with a border in thermal bluestone.

  • The fireplace was designed as a feature piece to be viewed from the interior of the home without blocking any views to the yard and featured the same bluestone in a chopped finish of multiple sizes, with a drystack finish in a horizontal pattern to relate to the horizontal patterns of the architecture of the home. Thick thermal bluestone was repeated on the hearth and mantle, to tie in with the terrace border and to provide a strong contrast with the chopped stone finish. Built-in concrete planters flank the 10’ tall fireplace, filled with trimmed boxwoods for a modern yet formal aesthetic.

A screen of 14’ tall Magnolia trees provides privacy from nearby neighbors and is covered in a layer of crushed limestone at the base, to form a border around the perimeter of the property, contrasting with the deep green hues of the Magnolias and framing the Zoysia lawn.

Sliding French doors with a double opening from the dining room of the house provide access directly onto the terrace and the opportunity for dining al fresco dining.  A seating area by the fireplace features Brown Jordan furniture and turquoise outdoor fabric, and a built-in grill and dining table by Gloster provide space for cooking and dining on the terrace as well. Bluestone stairs provide access to the lawn beyond the terrace.
